Cheyenne Mountain State Park and Pike’s Peak – August 3 and 4

We left Niwot on August 3 and headed south to the Colorado Springs area. Rather than staying at an RV park in town, we stayed at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

The afternoon of the 3rd, we drove into Garden of the Gods. It was extremely pretty, but extremely packed. There were no parking places and no place to pull off the road. Also, as we were driving through the park, the heavens opened up and it started pouring, so we headed back to camp. That evening, we were treated to a spectacular lightning show. The lightning hit the Wells Fargo ATM in town, taking it out of commission.

Marian was at Garden of the Gods two years ago and captured some gorgeous pictures. Marian, can you add a comment with links to your pics?
On the 4th, we drove up to Pike’s Peak. We tried to buy tickets for the cog railway, but they were sold out. Instead, we drove up the Pike’s Peak highway to the summit. I actually think this was the best bet, anyway; we saw more of the scenery than we would have if we had taken the train.

Pike's Peak inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write America the Beautiful.

Cog Railway

The Pike's Peak highway is steep and twisty-turny.

Disappointed we didn't actually see him.
